Lighthouse history comes with its own vocabulary. This starter glossary explains common terms visitors may see in tours, exhibits, and restoration notes.
Common Terms

| Aid to Navigation | A structure, signal, or marker that helps mariners determine position and avoid danger. |
| Lantern Room | The glassed-in room at the top of a tower that houses the light or lens. |
| Fresnel Lens | A lens design that focuses light efficiently and made many historic lighthouse beams visible at long distances. |
| Keeper | The person responsible for operating and maintaining a lighthouse before automation. |
| Light Station | The complete lighthouse site, often including the tower, keeper dwelling, outbuildings, and grounds. |
| Focal Height | The height of the light above the water, an important factor in visibility. |
