Glossary

Lighthouse history comes with its own vocabulary. This starter glossary explains common terms visitors may see in tours, exhibits, and restoration notes.

Common Terms

Term Meaning
Aid to Navigation A structure, signal, or marker that helps mariners determine position and avoid danger.
Lantern Room The glassed-in room at the top of a tower that houses the light or lens.
Fresnel Lens A lens design that focuses light efficiently and made many historic lighthouse beams visible at long distances.
Keeper The person responsible for operating and maintaining a lighthouse before automation.
Light Station The complete lighthouse site, often including the tower, keeper dwelling, outbuildings, and grounds.
Focal Height The height of the light above the water, an important factor in visibility.
