The present Whale Harbor lighthouse stands beside the Overseas Highway at the waterfront dining and marina property near Mile Marker 83.5. Its form recalls a longtime Upper Keys roadside landmark.
Whale Harbor’s original coral-rock lighthouse entrance was associated with the restaurant for decades. After a major fire, the old building and tower were removed in 2014. A new lighthouse was constructed on the redeveloped property by 2018, preserving the site’s lighthouse identity without reproducing the original structure exactly.
The lighthouse can be seen from the highway and from publicly accessible areas of the Whale Harbor restaurant property. It is decorative and not open for climbing.
The replacement tower remains a landmark for the operating Whale Harbor waterfront destination. It is not an aid to navigation.
